Ensuring technology strengthens justice and the rule of law.
Technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), could fundamentally change the justice system. There are significant potential benefits for our overstretched, underfunded system. But there are also serious risks, since the justice system holds people’s lives in its hands and protects our democracy.

Current and Future Work
We are working on five main projects to help ensure AI and technology strengthen the justice system.
AI and disclosure in criminal cases
We are exploring how AI could support prosecutors with disclosure in criminal cases (i.e. deciding what material to share with the defence), while safeguarding fair trials and preventing miscarriages of justice.
AI & unmet legal need
We are researching how people use AI chatbots to ask for legal advice, together with the Administrative Fairness Lab at the University of York.
Mock trials with AI evidence
We are advising on staging mock trials involving AI-produced evidence, as part of the PROBabLE Futures project's research on the implications of probabilistic technologies on law enforcement and criminal justice.
Roadmap to Ratifying the AI Convention
We are leading a report by legal practitioners and civil society organisations on the Council of Europe's Framework Convention on AI, Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, which the UK has signed but hasn't ratified. Our report will provide a roadmap to ratification.
Hearing people's voices on AI
We are seeking funding for research into how victims' voices can be better heard when AI is designed, developed and deployed in criminal justice.
