Legacy giving

Legacies give us the opportunity to provide for our family and friends and also for the causes we care about.

Remember us in your will

Help secure justice for generations to come

Do you remember the first time you felt how important justice is? Was it when the justice system helped friends or family? Or perhaps your intrinsic sense of fairness meant you've always believed in rights for all?

Our mission to build a fairer UK justice system within everyone’s reach has never been more urgent. The justice system is failing, with long waits for justice, prisons overflowing, and lawyers and judges attacked by the media and politicians.

Through our unique combination of research, engagement and influence, we can inspire the next generation to advocate for justice. By supporting us through a gift in your Will, you’ll directly aid this mission.

"My father passionately believed in human rights and the rule of law. From 2007 to 2009 he was Chairman of JUSTICE, an organisation whose commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and an independent judiciary matched his own. When he died in 2017, he left a substantial legacy to JUSTICE. As a family, we are delighted to see that this legacy continues to help support such a worthwhile organisation, whose strong voice is more important than ever, as a result of the advancing political pressures on the judiciary. My dad would be proud of the work JUSTICE continues to do."

Ways to leave a legacy

What are the different types of legacy gifts?

There are several ways to leave a gift to us in your Will, including:

  • A Residuary Gift: the remainder, or a percentage of the remainder, of your estate after all other gifts to family and friends are distributed. Even a small percentage of the residue could be of enormous benefit to the UK's rule of law and rights landscape.
  • A Pecuniary Gift: a specified sum of money. To ensure it keeps its value over the years, you can ask your solicitor to include an instruction that it is index-linked.
  • A Restricted Gift: either a Residuary or Pecuniary Gift where you specify that the money is to be used to support a particular area of our work.
  • A Specific Gift: an object that is part of the estate. It might include property, shares, or valuables. If you’re kindly considering this form of gift, please contact us so we can ensure it’s in line with our legacy policy and can store the item(s) properly.

Legacy queries

Frequently asked questions

Is a legacy gift tax efficient?

We are an exempt charity, so bequests - whether they’re residuary, pecuniary or specific - will not be subject to Inheritance Tax in the UK. By remembering us in your Will you might also be able to reduce the taxable value of your assets.

Inheritance Tax is a tax on the estate, including the property, money and possessions, of someone who has died. There’s normally no Inheritance Tax to pay if either: the value of your estate is below the £325,000 threshold if you’re single or £650,000 if you’re a married couple or civil partners; you leave everything to an exempt beneficiary such as a charity.

In April 2012, the government introduced a change to Inheritance Tax legislation meaning that in some situations people leaving 10% or more of their taxable estate to charity qualify for a reduced rate of Inheritance Tax from 40% to 36%. If you think your estate is going to be subject to Inheritance Tax, please discuss this with your solicitor. When including us in your Will, please include our registered charity numbers – England and Wales: 1058580 Scotland: SC043518.

I have already written my Will but would like to add a gift to JUSTICE. What should I do?

If you’ve already written your Will, we suggest filling out a Codicil form to discuss with your accountant, solicitor or financial advisor.

Do I need to specify which area of JUSTICE work my legacy should go towards?

No, many of the gifts we receive are left for unspecified use, allowing monies to be allocated to projects where the need is greatest. If you’re interested in supporting a particular area of our work, please email our Director of Development, Jane Collier, at jcollier@justice.org.uk for further information.

How can I let JUSTICE know that I intend to leave the organisation a legacy?

Please email our Director of Development, Jane Collier, at jcollier@justice.org.uk if you would like to let us know about your intention to leave a legacy to JUSTICE. It is always wonderful to hear that JUSTICE's work to protect people's rights and the rule of law will be safeguarded for future generations.
