Structure and people

JUSTICE was founded in 1957. It has been registered as a charity since in 1986 and is a company limited by guarantee, incorporated in June 1996.

JUSTICE’s work is overseen by its members – via a Council chaired by Helena Kennedy (Baroness Kennedy of the Shaws QC). The Council meets twice a year and includes prominent members of the legal profession and academic world who are elected at JUSTICE's Annual General Meeting, which all members are eligible to attend.

The Council appoints a sub-committee – the Executive Board – to govern the day-to-day running of the organisation. The Executive meets at least six times per year and is chaired by Jennifer McDermott. Smaller sub-committees oversee finance and fundraising.

The Director of JUSTICE is Roger Smith, who manages a team of staff as well as volunteers and interns.
