Sentencing and parole

JUSTICE works to promote a sentencing framework that is transparent, proportionate, non-discriminatory, and effective in reducing reoffending. We have a particular interest in the scope of restorative justice to reduce crime, assist victim recovery and improve public confidence in the criminal justice system.

We regularly respond to consultations on sentencing, including those of the Sentencing Council. We support a structured discretion for sentencers, to allow them to do justice in the individual case and are opposed to mandatory minimum sentences and indeterminate sentencing under the Criminal Justice Act 2003.

We believe that the parole system is in need of proper resourcing and greater independence to allow it to establish an efficient and effective system of supervised release of offenders.
