Policing

JUSTICE has long been at the forefront of debate regarding the role and powers of the police. The police play an important role in fulfilling the UK's positive obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights and other international human rights instruments. However, in the exercise of their considerable powers, the police can also infringe the rights of the individual.

We have been concerned to ensure that the lines are drawn in the right place to ensure that legislation, guidance and operational practice are informed by human rights principles, in conformity with domestic and international human rights obligations and promote the rule of law. In addition to commenting on relevant legislation and policy developments

JUSTICE is represented on the PACE Strategy Board and is currently developing a major project on policing, democracy and the rule of law.
