Administration and management of legal aid
Legal aid in England and Wales is currently managed by the Legal Services Commission. There are proposals that administration should be transferred to an executive agency that is a part of the Ministry of Justice. We have been concerned about the possible implications for the independence of decision-making and have sought to find ways in which that independence can be maintained. The Commission has developed sophisticated methods on quality assurance on which we have commented.
