The past year has seen a resurgence of discussion on the role of European Convention on Human Rights in the protection of individual rights and intense scrutiny of politically unpopular decisions by the judiciary, both at home and in Europe. Under the UK’s Chairmanship, the Brighton Declaration committed the Council of Europe to revisit the future of the European Court of Human Rights and states to do better on rights at home. The UK Commission on a Bill of Rights – considering the role of both the ECHR and the HRA 1998 – is expected to report in December 2012.
This session will explore the role of the ECHR and the Human Rights Act 1998 and the future for the protection of individual rights and liberties in the UK.
